That last panel looks so peaceful. Sure they’re tired, but they’re genuinely enjoying themselves. Props to the artist for being able to convey such an interesting expression.
To this day, I think my favorite film theory that I accept in my mind as canon is the theory that Shrek literally came up with his own name on the spot as he first meets Donkey
Apologies in advance for repeating some things that have been said on another tumblr post that I cannot find.
The catalyst from the theory comes from how uncertain he sounds when first introducing himself. The “uhhh……shrek” definitely sounds like something he kinda came up with on the spot. It’s even supported when he first introduces himself to Fiona, saying it in almost the same way.
But it’s a theory that seems to make sense. None of the signs or decorations in his swamp are marked with his name (unless you count the title card in the mud, but that’s probably not diagetic). There’s no record of his existence outside of simply “ogre”. And that’s all he’d ever really been to the world. The theme of him being seen as a monster is obviously seen throughout the movie quite a bit, but that can also be seen with how he’s addressed throughout the movie.
I took a look over the transcript for the point. Up until halfway through the movie, there are only two characters who say Shrek’s name. Shrek himself, once when introducing himself, and Donkey. The first time anyone else says his name is when he first saves Fiona and asks his name, still believing him to be Prince Charming. Of course, after finding how unorthodox he is and then learning he’s an ogre, she doesn’t refer to him by name at all until the next day after the Robin Hood encounter. At no point in the movie does anyone else say the word “Shrek”. Not even Lord Farquaad. Farquaad always refers to him as “the beast” or “this thing” or “the ogre”. And that’s part of the theme of how he is seen by the rest of the world. As far as he knows, he doesn’t have a name. He’s just…an ogre.
If this theory is true, then he never really thought of having a name. At least, not until he met Donkey. Donkey might have been the first person to ask him his name. And he wasn’t someone who just ran away from him, thinking he was some hideous beast. And that’s what made him decide to give Donkey his “name”. It’s what started to give him a sense of identity as being more than a monster. It’s a theory that massively improves the movie and I will live and die by it.
I was actually thinking about this right after I posted this.
My theory is that he’s just a dimwit who loves the hell out of life too much to reflect on himself and his identity. So he just thinks of himself as “Donkey” and is like “aw hell yeah you bet your ass (lol) I’m Donkey!”
Remember: women can regenerate your health if you think about them for long enough, but be careful on overcharging it
i do nothing but think abt women everyday. have i overcharged it.?
Your natural yuri abilities have given you a resistance to this debuff, but at the cost of being easily flustered by women which temporary disables your abilities
wow…! thanks for the tip! i think im finally ready to face the dark lord!
Okay so my favorite thing about this that kinda gets lost in translation is that the word ガーリックトースト is read as “gaarikku tousuto” which means the final お is just an extension of the last sound
So, I’ve been reading some hanahaki fics lately and had a thought. What if in One Piece universe hanahaki you get the sea in your lungs instead of earth and flowers?
How would our charcters handle it? Would it effect devil fruit users differently? Do you drown instead of suffocate when it reaches full growth? Can you fix it? Usually you get the roots removed with flowers but how would that work with water?
Possible process
It starts with water. They cough into their elbow and it feels wet. Gross. Except.. when they pull back there’s nothing there except some water. They realize their mouth tastes of salt.
The next step is sand. It’s terrible. Their mouth is never clean no matter how many times they clean it. There’s always sand stuck between teeth and under the tongue. The inside of the mouth is raw and their throat is a mess. All they can taste anymore is salt, iron, and grit.
They find themselves hunched over getting sick more often. Agony creeping up the throat to be spit out in water and seafoam covered bits of coral, driftwood, seaweed, shells, etc. Everything hurts.
Later on, after it’s progressed further and while during their daily shoreline cough up, they feel something weird come up. They spit a very small fish out into their hand. It wiggles weakly in the oxygen and they stare at it barely breathing before dropping it in the sink. All of the sand and coral and other bits have stopped the water from draining and the little fish swims happily in the small sea.
Luffy
Luffy doesn’t say anything. He spits out the salt water over the deck and ignores the way it makes his lips numb. When he starts coughing up little fish, he drops them in the aquarium when no one is around. He pretends not to see the way Robin notices a few one day and looks at him with devestation in her eyes.
Zoro
Zoro tries to ignore it at first. Swallows the salt water right back down a raw throat and barely flinches. He meditates a lot, tries to filter out the fluttering in his chest that makes him think of small fins and how grinding his teeth makes the sand taste worse.
Sanji
Sanji sits at the kitchen table and stares at the wall. He doesn’t know what to do anymore. He can’t cook properly if he can’t taste and all he can taste anymore is salt and blood. His appetite is gone, which is good since his throat is raw anyway. He puts his head in his hands and wonders how many times the sea will try to kill him.
Ace
Ace is devestated when he starts coughing up salt water. He just got a family. He just started to enjoy who he was becoming and not feel guilt weighing him down. How ironic. He coughs up wet, black ash from his flames trying to burn away the water. Oh god, how is he going to tell Luffy?
Marco
Marco keeps it to himself, familiar with what’s happening and the limited treatments available. It won’t kill him, the phoenix rolls over his lungs in blue waves that constantly try to soothe the hurricane brewing. It won’t kill him, no, but it will still hurt. It will still be something he has to deal with. An eternity of pain waves at him like the sea. Healing has never hurt so much.
Law
Law tries to get it out. Absolutely refuses to die of something else after he beat Amber Lead. He tries to use his powers but the saltwater makes them flicker in and out sometimes, and it ends in blood and open wounds and his crew scrambling around to fix him, to keep his alive. Coral cruches under their feet as they work. They manage to save him and he wakes up already wanting to try it again. He wants it out.
Nami
Nami looks at the water and sand in her hand. She swirls it gently and small bubbles work their way up to the surface. The crew flutters around her nervously, Chopper already digging through books with tears on his cheeks. She looks at the small oasis in her hands but her mind lingers on a desert kingdom instead.
**turns out the feelings are shared, they’re just idiots, and everything turns out fine and happy for everyone**
